Friday night, as one of our Frugal Frog Friday activities, Chase and I embarked upon a project–to make homemade Apple Butter!
On our “Fall Walk,” we stopped by a local grocery store and picked up three GIANT containers of applesauce.
Yes, I confess, I took the easy way out. I knew that you make apple butter out of applesauce (preferably homemade) and I did not have the time to make it from scratch. Plus, when I make homemade applesauce, I want to eat it as applesauce, not make it into butter. However, I have a little brother with a desperate need to try apple butter for the first time in his life, and thus, I took a shortcut.
I would also like to mention that this shortcut only set us back $6. Not a bad cost for Friday night entertainment.
Shortcut Apple Butter on takes 3 other ingredients:
Cinnamon and Sugar:
Shortcut Homemade Apple Butter
3 Giant jars of Applesauce
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Ground Cloves
1) Pour all ingredients into a crockpot.
3) Cook for 16 hours
4) Pour into any and all old Almond Butter/Coconut Butter jars (I knew they would come in handy…)
I also have a tupperware bowl full of the excess butter. All in all it made about 10 pints. I am officially swimming in Apple Butter.
To be perfectly honest, the amazing smell that has permeated our apartment this weekend made this little project TOTALLY worth it! It served as the best “candle” in the whole world. Also, everyone within a 30 mile radius of us is being gifted apple butter this week!
I would definitely recommend making this apple butter! It is a fun (and FRUGAL!) experience.
All of the butter making I have been doing (Coconut, Almond, Apple) has me thinking about condiments. Which leads me to today’s question: What is your favorite condiment?
