We Plan, God Laughs

Holy. Snow.

And this was just the beginning.

We received 8 inches of snow…in OCTOBER….in a period of 6 hours.

Basically, all of my plans about having a relaxing and special day with Chase went out the window. Not only were the snowy, icy conditions preventing us from having fun, but we lost power.

Can we all take a moment to recognize the amazingly important, and often overlooked, role that electricity plays in our lives:

Dearest Electricity, I will never take you for granted again.

Instead of having a romantic day and a lovely dinner, we went into survival mode. My job is dependent on wifi and I must be able to access the internet at all times, especially on weekends. Consequently, we spent the entire day shopping for flashlights and borrowing power from Panera.

While we had reservations at a romantic restaurant, the roads were so bad that we ended up just eating at Panera. Let me tell you, after discovering my intolerance to gluten, Panera has lost its luster.

This is what my “romantic dinner” looked like (Minus the bread and minus the croutons).

I guess the bright side of this debacle is the fact that I had no time for grief after dropping Chase off at the airport early this morning. Instead I had to figure out how to get wifi, charge all of the electronics that were now on empty, and throw away any food in our fridge and freezer that were perishable.

The happy thing is thatΒ  all we lost was a few leftovers and a carton of eggs (a Frugal Frog victory, indeed!).

As of right now, Chase is safely in sunny California and I am stuck with no heat, electricity, or wifi for the indefinite future.

Also, to be honest, being Paleo without electricity stinks. How did those cave people do this?! Basically my diet has consisted of about 100 bananas and apples:

And lots and lots of this:

While I was able to put on a smiley face yesterday and this morning, by this afternoon, after 24+ hours without power and with PPL electric reporting that restoring electricity to the 120,000 customers will be a “multi-day affair,” I lost the victory. Big. Time.

I decided there is a time and a place for being a frugal frog, but being cold, grumpy, and alone is not that time. Thus, I headed to hotels.com and booked a hotel room for a grand total of $93. I’ll take it!

The best part about my room is that it not only has electricity and heat, but it also has:

A MICROWAVE! And a mini-fridge–HOLLER.

I hightailed it to the grocery and picked up some food other than apples and bananas. Basically, my goal was to be as paleo as possible.

Protein = Yum!

And:

VEGGIES!

And, because this day was 100% awful, terrible, no good and very bad….I had these for dessert:

Totally not Paleo, but totally amazing.

My schedule for the night is to turn on every single light in my hotel room, watch lifetime movies, and go to bed SUPER early.

Perfection.

In the memory of those scrumptious M&M’s and the fact that tomorrow is Halloween, what is your favorite candy? Are you a chocolate person or a fruity/sugary/sour candy person?

I am all about the Peanut M&M’s…and caramels.

  1. Woah! Eight inches?! Luckily, we didn’t get that much here, but I had to scrape snow and ice off my car this morning…so not ready to do that!

That totally stinks that you lost power, but enjoy your “vacation” at the hotel!

    • I HATE scraping snow. I think it is one of my least favorite car duties. I am glad that Maryland did not get hit as hard. An inch of snow is a lovely decoration–anything more than that is bad news!

  2. Aw! No way! The whole loss of electricity is a bummer! 😦 However, I am glad that you booked yourself a hotel room- that was a great idea on your part. Be sure to watch a movie all curled up in the warm hotel bed.
I like all chocolate all year round but am not partial to any Halloween candy. I guess I do like the few candy corns that I get to eat a year and I *love* caramels! But can’t eat them because I just got a crown on one of my teeth 😦 I’ll survive!
    *STAY WARM!*

    • I totally obeyed your “orders” last night! πŸ™‚ I actually watched “Pretty Woman” in its entirety for the first time in my life.

I actually have not eaten any candy corn this year–I will have to go to CVS tomorrow to get the after-Halloween sale prices!

Ayayay I’m sorry that you had to deal with no electricity. I can barely deal with not having it in south Florida when it goes out, and thats WITHOUT the 8 inches of snow! Smart move booking the hotel πŸ˜‰

And I’m totally calling that the almond butter is from Costco, yes?

    • Yep, having to deal with no power AND snow issues is not a good combo–boo!

The almond butter is from Sam’s, so basically you were right on. (I WISH we had Costco here….I miss it!).

The town I live near doesn’t have it, but our campus had it restored earlier this morning.
    Stay cozy tonight!
And my favorite candy is candy corn πŸ™‚ also regular m&ms rock along with peanut… snickers are so good too

    • Yeah, this whole North East living has a price! Ha! I am glad you have power now! As of right now–still no luck. I am praying that by tonight it will come back.

I still have to pick up some candy corn–how have I forgotten to do that?! Unforgivable!

  5. Might not be frugal, but I bet you get more enjoyment and satisfaction out of the $$$ you spend staying somewhere warm with electricity than you would on most other things. What a crazy weekend!

  6. The snow was totally crazy, but we didn’t lose power where I’m at. I know a lot of people around the area lost it though, & there are tons of trees down/roads closed. I’m secretly hoping for a day off of school tomorrow because I have so much grading do to & could really use the extra time! Enjoy your night in the hotel!

  8. The hotel was TOTALLY worth it!!!!!!! I’m sorry your plans got ruined!! Bummer. You deserved the M&Ms! πŸ™‚ I love candy corn pumpkins. I ate them last week. I doubt I’ll even eat any candy tomorrow. I’m really more the salty type! πŸ™‚

    • Yes, the hotel was worth every single penny! I am super excited to be able to workout at the hotel gym–it’s the small things! πŸ™‚

For some reason the pumpkins just taste more delicious than the regular candy corns! Sometimes I think you can taste cuteness.

  10. I totally know the feeling! Actually I dont because Ive never lost power for more than an hour and I really dont know what I’d do…. BUT we’ve started getting loads of snow in London during winter and the novelty massively wears off after about an hour. Sometimes though I do think its nice when bad stuff happens and you have an excuse to treat yourself – alla hotel rooms – just a shame chase couldnt share it with you right…!?x

    • I hate that as an adult I have developed a jaded feeling toward snow. I want to love it still, but this whole no power thing is not cool.

I have been trying to savor the adventure of staying in a hotel alone–first time ever! Having the entire bed to myself was rather lovely! πŸ™‚

  12. Oh my goodness! It’s so hard to believe you’re getting snow while we’re back to 80 degree temps! I’m so glad you got a hotel room! Of course that all has to happen when the hubby leaves. 😦

Chase is in my home area! You should go visit him while he is there, I promise you won’t find any snow! πŸ™‚ I hope this month apart goes by fast so you can be together again before you know it!
