Christmas Traditions: Adventing

I have always loved advent calendars. As a child, the chocolate advent calendars were definitely my favorite:

This December, Chase and I have embraced a few new advent traditions:

Instead of candy, I placed little pieces of paper with various holiday activities to be completed each day. For example, yesterday the activity was a “Hot Chocolate date.” So we made sure to stop by our neighborhood Starbucks and ordered a cup of delicious cocoa.

Our other new advent activity is made possible by living in the Christmas City! Bethlehem has started a living advent calendar. Every night at 5 PM, people gather outside the Bethlehem Visitor’s Center on Main Street and a child gets to know on the door and wait for the surprise “scene”ย  or group of costumed people. Last night we took out “little brother” and a group of colonial carolers popped out of the door:

They led the crowd in singing Christmas carols and then explainedย  Moravian Christmas traditions from the 1700s. At the end of the advent performance they passed out peppermints. It was such a neat event!

Chase and I are still creating holiday traditions, but these two ideas are definitely keepers!

What are your favorite Christmas traditions? Did you grow up with Advent calendars?ย

  2. I love advent calendars! I love decorating the tree and listening to Christmas music. On Christmas eve, we have a family tradition where we attend church with my bff and her family, which is another one I love.

  4. I love that you are ‘creating holiday traditions’! I created a few this year with my friends, but its sad that I won’t be living here with them next year. In fact I have no idea where I’ll be! But that’s such a fun idea for an advent calendar. I think I might get sick of the same milk chocolate day after day but fun activities never get old.

  8. What a wonderful idea for an advent calendar! My FIL brought us some Fanny Mae (Is that right??) advent calendars while we were in Missouri and then we started Whole30. Ash was very upset about this, haha. I’m not a big chocolate person (gasp! I know, I know…) so I’m loving your cute and creative idea!

    • That is the worst! Especially because Fannie Mae is actually AMAZING chocolate. We always would buy the $1.99 calendars and the chocolate would taste like plastic. Eeek! You two are devoted doing Whole 30 this month! I am very impressed!
