Gingerbread House Competition

The 2011 Gingerbread House Competition has officially come to an end.

Chase’s mom and step-dad have instituted an annual gingerbread house competition. His family has always decorated them since he was little; however, more recently, they have made it a competition. I am a gingerbread newbie, but I take competition VERY seriously. After last year (when I lost miserably), I decided I would do some research and come back STRONG this year.  I did some serious google research and pinteresting. My hours of research inspired this creation:

I decided to boost my originality points by using pretzel stick “logs” instead of the usual graham crackers.  I also added trees and a campfire for character. Points are also awarded for structural stability, so I performed a shake test and all was well.

After construction, we had to present our houses to the panel of judges a la American Idol.

Chase’s stepdad dressed like Simon, Chase’s mom was Paula, and our adopted Uncle Jack was Randy.

I took the presentation VERY seriously….can you tell?

While my house was all well and good, Chase’s gingerbread house was INCREDIBLE this year.

Chase really utilized the Oreo cookie to its highest potential. He brought his A-game this year! He also created a Bethlehem Star on the left part of the roof–super cute, right? He also put mini Hershey kisses on the roof in tribute to Pennsylvania!

His gingerbread house actually won 1st place (and the $100 dollar prize!) and mine was voted 2nd. I was PUMPED!!!

It was SUCH a fun night!  It is a wonderful tradition that we all look forward to! It provides a fun activity to do all together. There is always lots of laughs and good conversation.

Do you have any great family traditions?

Are you good at Arts & Crafts? I am terribly lacking in any and all artistic genes.
