New Years Resolutions

Happy 2012!

We are finally back in Pennsylvania! It was so hard to leave Kentucky, but it does feel nice to have life back in order. On the 10 hour drive back to Bethlehem, I had quite a bit of time to think about New Years Resolutions. I am that super crazy person that likes to make a wide variety of resolutions that fall in 3 different categories: Health, Relationships, Investments.


1) Drink More Water


This may sound super lame, but in the chaos of everyday life I totally forget to drink water.Β  Being hydrated makes me feel SO much better and it allows me to run longer and recover faster. Today I am going to buy a new water bottle to help motivate/remind me to drink up. My goal is going to be to drink at least 4 water bottles (24 oz each) per day.

2) Do yoga at least once a week

3) Eat more vegetables

I want to eat at least 5 servings of VEGETABLES each day. While eating veggies comes rather naturally on Paleo, I still come up short. My goal is to include at least 2 servings with lunch and 3 servings at dinner. I think trying to addingΒ  a salad a day will allow me to meet this goal.

4) Run a Marathon/Half-Marathon

I know I want to run another half marathon this year and MAYBE a full. 2011 was the first year in 6 that I did not run at least one half marathon. I am pretty excited about moving to the DC area because the running scene is incredible. I think having a race to train for will help amp up my love of running. (Right now running and I are in the “like not love” stage). If anyone is interested in running a half or full in Maryland/Virginia let me know!


1) Kiss every single night

Chase and I will be celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary this year and even though I still feel like a newlywed, I totally forget the simple things like kissing him when he or I get home or before we go to sleep at night. I am definitely a “tasker” and when I have my tasking hat on, I am basically a-sentimental. I really want to work on taking time to hug, kiss, and hold hands before I “task.”

2) Read the Bible in a Year

I have done this previously, but I want to do it again. I feel like with the craziness of life, I often forget to be mindful and have quiet time each and every day. In 2012 I want to make this a top priority. Chase is also joining me for this resolution, so I think having this as a shared resolution will be excellent for accountability and for discussions!

3) Reduce the amount of Reality Television I watch.

I ashamed to admit that I can identify every single person in this photo and tell you their life stories. This is not something I am proud of–that is so much brain space that could be used for something more edifying. Don’t get me wrong, I will not be abandoning all Housewives, but tuning in religiously will no longer be happening. Hopefully 2012 will have more reading and less watching.


1) Buy New Towels

Guys, you have no idea how much of a commitment buying new towels can be for me. I am TERRIBLE at parting with old towels and buying new ones. I feel like selecting the colors is a commitment in and of itself. However, I am sick of our towels; we have had them for 5 years. It is time for a change. I vow to buy a new set of towels in 2012.

2) Buy a House

Um, yeah. If I have trouble buying towels, buying a house is going to be INSANE. However, I am super excited about making this investment in our future. We are currently house hunting and *hopefully* will be buying a house by May/June of 2012. YAY!Β  Any and all advice is appreciated. πŸ™‚

  1. I love your goals. And drinking more water is not lame. It’s something I’m having to recommit myself to alllll the time because I have a serious hydration problem, especially now living in Denver!!

    I love the kiss goodnight resolution. That’s so sweet. I’m working on the Bible in a year too. Kevin and I are tackling the NT together and the OT separately. So far so good!!

  2. Buying a house is a big deal- congrats on being at that place in your life, very exciting! I have some loose goals in my mind but nothing written down or in stone yet. I think I am going to be a little more loose about goals this year and adjust them as my year plays out because there is a ton of uncertainty with my year coming up!

    • I think a loose approach is always good. I definitely try not to be too rigid about resolutions, that is why I tried to make a blend of simple and more difficult goals! I know how daunting that last semester of college can be with the uncertainty looming, but you are going to do marvelous!!

  3. One of our resolutions is Yoga too! We began yesterday with a one hour Yoga session for beginners..and in a few minutes are dressing down for our 2nd day of Yoga! So far so good on keeping that resolution!

    Our other resolution is to fill our life with people who bring goodness to our life and the world, and eliminate the people who only want to drain us and take from us and the world. This one may be more challenging….(as habits and relationship patterns are hard to break), but we are quite determined and have felt the joy of adhering to this.

    Good luck on keeping your resolutions! It will be an exciting year for you to be sure!

    Oh and your resolution to run a half?? Um, come to New Orleans for the Rock n Roll!! Duh! πŸ™‚

  5. I am totally a “tasker” too! I feel bad about it sometimes but I guess that’s just the way I am. I also need to resolve to drink more water and I also recently stopped watching as much reality TV because frankly, it’s often quite depressing. Happy New Year!

    Wow I LOVE these goals! Seriously, you sound a lot like myself with the whole “priority-hat” ordeal. Will is very emotional and romantic, but when it comes time for me to complete the tasks I have on my mind, I can easily forget how important it is to take time to kiss and hug. (and we’re not even married!) Also, reading the Bible is a great one too πŸ™‚ I’m working on that myself!

  7. I think it’s a great idea to organize your resolutions into categories. I just got back from Vermont, and I haven’t had the chance to really sit down and write down my goals for the year. I’m sure I’ll have some random ones in there, too! πŸ™‚ I agree that I need to drink more water (and less coffee)!!

    Great idea for resolutions! I am also guilty of not drinking enough water…and then I wonder why I have a splitting headache at 3 PM. Doh! And one of my resolutions is yoga too…maybe I should invest in yoga stock πŸ™‚

  9. If I didn’t get anxiety attacks from running races that I “have” to run, I would totally run a race with you. How about we walk around DC instead? And shop?

    I get weirdly attached to towels, too. We have a huge closet full of towels, but I refuse to use all but three of them. They have to be white and super plush!

  10. Great goals for 2012! I love the kiss/hug/hold hands more goal – its easy to let life get in the way but its amazing how much a small gesture (or what seems small) can really be beneficial to both people!

  11. I need to drink more water and I am totally on the right track- my mom bought me a new water bottle for Christmas! Feeling like a newlywed after 5 years of marriage is such a blessing- congrats to you two and your flame πŸ™‚ Aw!
    Buying a house is a HUGE deal, the husband and I bought ours last year and it was such a big deal, I can’t even explain. Ease yourself into it with the towels πŸ˜‰

    • I have a new water bottle too, and I am SO excited to fill it up millions of times each day! πŸ™‚

      I keep trying not to think of the MAJOR significance of the whole house buying situation. I am trying to take it one step at a time. The towels are the first step forward!

  12. Love your goals! I’m with you on the drinking water thing, but it’s difficult being a teacher because you can’t just run to the bathroom whenever! The towels thing is hysterical! That should be pretty easy to check off your list! πŸ™‚

  13. Oh Twinnie – we have struck again. I am totally the same in terms of being a major TASKER/ borderline OCD, and the only way I can include ‘spontaneous’ things in my life is to plan for them. I personally feel it makes me a more productive person (it DOES!!) but it drives Louis crazy. This means I now no longer let him see my monthly calendar where it says ‘ Saturday – Lie in with Louis until at least midday’ – ‘ Monday – suggest SPONTANEOUS drink and tapas to Louis when he comes home from work’. WOHOOO!

    Oh and you know Im with you on the veggies – Im actually going to do a series of posts on how to squeeze more veggies in, so we can do that together.

  14. Drink more water… Yes, was right there with you. Got a little better after I got my stainless bottle, but I have to leave it on the counter and not put it away in the cabinet or I’ll forget about it. Also have a sticky on the wall in front of my desk that says WATER. It helps!

    These are all awesome goals! I love how you divided them into different groups. I want to try to read the bible in one year too! I’ve been trying to drink more water since last Summer and feel so much better! πŸ™‚
