In Need of a Hobby!

Much to my utter sadness, my time with these two cuties is quickly coming to an end…

(The girls love saying “ahhhhh” and having me look at their throat with a flashlight…I have trained them well!)

My hours nannying are gradually diminishing as we get closer to our moving date in May.  While I recognize that this is, in fact, ideal, my heart aches in anticipation of actually leaving the twins.  Seriously, I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

This means that for the next 6 weeks I have a bit of extra free time on my hands.  In May I will begin teaching two college literature courses (on top of my full-time job…yeah, I have issues with whole “saying no!” thing). With this in mind, I want to be sure to take some time to relax BUT I SUCK AT IT. I am literally the WORST relaxer on the face of the earth. It actually makes me super angsty and I begin cleaning everything.

Consequently, I am officially looking for a hobby. Any recommendations? I have always considered running a hobby, but a girl can only run so many miles every day. I also love cooking, but there again, you can only cook so much when you only live with one person.

Perhaps we should get a pet…

(This is a picture of our one and only pet–our fish–Kathleen Kelly.  We actually had to re-gift our fish to a friend because it turned out to be too much responsibility…)

I keep gravitating toward the idea of getting a pet, but I know that this is NOT the right time with the whole move coming up and the fact that once May comes, both Chase and I will be working 24/7.

Chase suggested that we start rock climbing….

I have no idea why since the last time I climbed ANYTHING was at least a decade ago. I am probably one of the most accident prone people in the world, so boulders are probably a no-go for me.

I plan on reading books:

These in particular….

However, reading hundreds of graduate papers is still my full time job, so I don’t exactly want to be reading 24/7.

What are your hobbies? Any suggestions? What would you do in my situation?

About paleorunnergirl

I am obsessed with cooking, running and reading! I teach American Literature at the college level, but enjoy books of all kind! After years of GI issues and being prescribed numerous medications, I found perfection in eating Paleo! I am no longer bloated, nauseous, or miserable on a daily basis. I have delved into creating Paleo recipe-making and embracing an active and playful life!

  1. I count running as my hobby!! Lol. And blogging. You already do both of those things! 🙂 Maybe you should take up piano?

    • I used to play the piano and the harp! The problem is that both are in Kentucky and I think they would be VERY costly to ship–or buy! Why are instruments so dang expensive?!

  4. Oh, hobbies are hard. What about a new fitness thing (crossfit?) you’ve been thinking about trying out? Or a short course at a local TAFE (gosh, what do you call TAFE’s over there- community college?). Ideally you want something that you can drop/reduce when life gets crazy for you again.

    • I have been flirting with the idea of trying crossfit. I think I may need to just DO IT! I also will have to check out the offerings at the community college nearby–that could be fun! Thanks!

  5. I wish I had more time for a hobby! Blogging is my main hobby, & I try to squeeze in reading when I can.

I would have a hard time resisting a pet! 🙂

  6. Crafting!!!! 🙂 Ok…maybe I’m a little biased, but seriously, crafting is pretty cheap and you can display tons of your own creations around the house. Easter is coming up soon and you could make a really cute wreath! Look to other blogs for crafty inspiration; trust me, you will find a crafting gene in yourself 🙂

    • I totally want to start crafting! Do you have any good blog suggestions? I have never been very successful at crafting, but it is never too late to start!

      • There is a great blog called “Oops I Craft My Pants” that is amazing (and I love love love the name!) and she does pretty simple crafts that turn out amazing.

  7. I love knitting and crocheting — fun and a great way to make unique gifts for friends and families. 🙂 I also like volunteering — I do “virtual” volunteering so I do everything remotely. I do PR for an animal nonprofit.

  8. New hobbies are always fun to pick up, but then they become another thing you need to squeeze into your busy schedule!! You should relax, read and take advantage of some free time.

  9. Rock climbing looks like so much fun! I would try it and for sure read some good books, I want to read the hunger games before I go see the movie. Also I’d suggest pilates or yoga something you can build on and have fun with 🙂

  10. Before I got a dog, I used to volunteer at a local shelter to walk the dogs. It was fun and they are always looking for people to help out. Or you could start a new fitness program – I’m doing a 10-week one right now that is sure keeping me busy!

  11. I totally understand not having the ability to relax. I feel like every time that I get my schedule under control I start something new. As for hobbies, I know you run a lot but have you ever tried some other exercise classes? I’m hearing a lot about Crossfit and Zumba sounds fun. Also, Bikram (hot) yoga is a really great supplemental workout for runners. Good luck filling your free time!

I like the idea of volunteering or crafting. I am not a crafty person, so I would live vicariously through you. I tried once to make a wreath from pine cones…me = failure.

What about trying some different fitness classes too? I just started a boxing class and I LOVE love love it!

  14. What about gardening? You could start with some potted flowers, maybe even some fresh produce in pots or herbs. And I highly recommend CrossFit. It’s addicting and you will make lots of new friends to keep you busy!

  16. Rock climbing looks like so much fun and not to mention an awesome workout! My college gym had a huge indoor climbing wall – I miss it!

Have you searched pinterest for DIY crafts? I have found tons of ideas on there and usually you can go to the blog to get a tutorial.

I know a few people above suggested Crossfit – you should definitely give it a try! Most Xfit box’s will let you try a few classes for free! Also, check to see if your Navy base has one because I know a lot of Army posts do. The box I go to is on post. 🙂
